Modern technology has allowed for remarkable new methods of virtual communication. In some ways, this has been a great way to socialize, however some social interaction can also be toxic and damaging. Using social media properly can have multiple benefits, but unfortunately it is often used excessively and taken advantage of. Stress from social media can impact emotions, intellectual abilities, concentration, and personality.
Since social media is a relatively new invention, it is important to be aware of the risks and avoid the dangers of social media over-usage and exploitation.
Anonymous Content and Harassment
Much of what we see on social media is through sources we do not know on a personal level, and this has clear safety risks. In terms of bullying and discrimination, the anonymity of online posts can make the content much more hurtful as the aggressor feels protected by a secure screen and will never have to experience the reaction of the person on the other side of the attack. Meanwhile, online harassment, sexting, fatigue, and stress can all lead to depression. These forms of abuse are never-ending as it is very difficult to permanently delete online information, and posts can be sent from any place at any time. Even when in a safe space like your own home, you may be the target of an online attack.
Social Anxiety, Jealousy, Loneliness, and Stress
Some would describe social media as a “highlight reel” of a person’s life, as people do not want to broadcast the negative aspects of their lives online. From a distance, this can send the wrong message to viewers that life is so easy and wonderful, when really everyone goes through highlights and pitfalls. Getting caught up viewing other peoples’ highlights while you are going through a tough time can lead to increased feelings of jealousy and self-pity.
Loneliness is defined as the discrepancy among one’s desired level of social contacts and an individual’s practical social life. The culture of today’s society is to post all of life’s events online. Platforms spew an information overload containing the details of others’ lives and can make you feel like you are missing out, and this phenomenon is experienced more than ever before.
Using Social Media in Positive Ways
There are qualities of social media that are very beneficial. When used in appropriate amounts and in a respectful manner, communication is quicker and more efficient. Online friendships are an innovative solution to battling loneliness, especially when someone finds it very difficult to make connections in person.
It can be easy to get distracted by the shiny highlights of other users posts online but keeping in touch with reality and maintaining a bigger picture is always important in order to maintain a healthy relationship with social media.
