Depression and obesity are often found together. Being overweight can have a severe impact on mental health. And depression and its related behaviors and medications can have a significant impact on weight management.

So how can we break this cycle?

Let’s talk about food – why is it so important?

The food that we eat contains ingredients that affect our body in different ways. Chemical compounds and hormones in some foods can trigger reactions in the brain that directly influence how we feel, and can even lead to depression, while other foods can have the opposite affect and trigger “healing” elements that make us feel good. In a more holistic sense, when we eat healthy foods, we generally feel better as a whole. Having a healthy relationship with food and putting nutritious foods into your body can lead to healthier lifestyle habits.

Start by speaking to your Dario Coach about the best approach to improve eating habits. Some suggestions may include limiting excess sugar in snacks and sodas, implementing a meal schedule, and not eating after dinner. Your Dario Coach can help you tailor a plan to meet your needs and preferences.

Exercise, Depression, and Obesity

Physical activity can help both depression and obesity by improving mood and decreasing body fat. However, having depression and/or obesity can make it difficult to find the motivation to work out. Find activities that you enjoy and look forward to. Starting with a small thing like a short walk. Once you’ve got into your stride, gradually increasing your activity to at least 30 minutes of exercise a day would be ideal.

Note: If you have negative thoughts about yourself, have a loss of appetite, frequently feel anxious or irritable, or find day-to-day life difficult, you should consider making an appointment with your family doctor.
