Lipid disorder is when there is too much bad cholesterol (LDL) or fats (triglycerides) in your blood. This can make you more likely to get heart disease.

What can cause lipid disorders?

There are different things that can cause lipid disorder, like what you eat, if you smoke or drink too much alcohol, if you’re not active enough, if you are overweight, or if you take certain medications. Health conditions like diabetes, hypothyroidism, kidney disease and liver disease can also increase the likelihood of lipid disorder. Sometimes lipid disorder runs in families.

How is lipid disorder treated?

To treat lipid disorder, your doctor may suggest changing your diet and being more active. For example, walking is a good way to lower triglycerides and increase good cholesterol. And you should eat a healthy diet with more oily fish, brown rice and pasta, and fruit and vegetables. Reduce or cut out saturated and trans fats like dairy, lard, fried foods, fatty and cured meats, baked goods, and sugary products.

What about medicines?

You may also need to take medicine to treat lipid disorder. Medicines your doctor may give you may include:

Statins are a group of medicines that reduce the amount of LDL (bad) cholesterol in your body. They work well and are very good at lowering your risk of heart disease.

PCSK9 inhibitors are a special kind of medicine for people who have a genetic condition that causes very high levels of LDL cholesterol, or for people with heart disease who can’t take the usual medicine for bad cholesterol.

Bile acid blocks are medicines that help the body get rid of LDL cholesterol by making the gut take more of it out.

Fibrates are good for lowering the amount of fat (triglyceride) in the blood along with a mild amount of the bad cholesterol. They also increase good cholesterol levels.

Nicotinic acid (niacin) is a vitamin that helps the body make less fat in the liver. It is often taken with statins because it can make the good cholesterol go up.

Omega-3 comes from fish oil and is often used along with changes in diet to help people with high triglyceride levels in their blood.

It is important to talk to your doctor to understand your risk for different health problems and to choose the right medicine and treatment plan for you.
