Trying to lose weight can sometimes feel like an uphill battle. Sometimes it feels like that extra weight will never come off, and when it does, it comes right back again. And, to add to all this, there are so many things out there that serve to destroy your self-esteem.
Let’s look for the positive!
Getting into the weight loss mindset is all about believing in yourself. By thinking positively, you can deal with self-doubts and stay committed. By practicing positive thinking, you can visualize your success, expect the best to happen, and stay optimistic. If you always think you are going to fail; then you will fail.
What is positive thinking?
Positive thinking is acknowledging your negative feelings and coming up with a mantra that changes them. You also need to set and accept realistic goals. For example, if one of your thoughts is “I can’t give up cookies, it’s too hard” you should respond with “I can cut down on cookies and make them a reward for good habits.”
How do you keep thinking positive?
There are some important ways to achieve and sustain positivity. Here are some things to try:
Manageable goals. Avoid unrealistic expectations to keep yourself from being disappointed and overwhelmed. When you achieve a goal, acknowledge your achievement and reward yourself with something you enjoy (not food).
Don’t punish yourself for slipping. Instead, stay on track and remind yourself that one slip is not going to undo all of your progress.
Make a list of all of your achievements. Whenever you start to feel down, look at the list.
Don’t be a perfectionist. Don’t be so strict on yourself that you set yourself up to fail. A sustainable diet is controlled portions, healthier choices, and learning to enjoy things other than food.
Visualize your success. Imagine yourself completing your workout, making healthy choices in a restaurant, or looking the way you want to look in the mirror.
Acknowledge negative thoughts and then set them aside. You will have negative thoughts, you just shouldn’t dwell on them.
Remind yourself why you are losing weight in the first place. Whether it’s your health, fitness, or simply that favorite dress that’s hanging in your wardrobe, remind yourself why you are on this journey and why it will be awesome to cross the finishing line!
Remember, your weight loss needs to be sustainable. This means it needs to be consistent and moderate. It’s very easy to fall into a negative cycle of thoughts that then turns into a downward spiral that can become a barrier to weight loss. Positive thinking is a vital part of sustaining your weight loss and fitness goals.
